Before You Enter a Flooded Area
Do not enter a flooded space to plug in a dehumidifier, pump, wet vacuum, fan, or other electrical equipment.
If standing water may be in contact with outlets, wiring, appliances, extension cords, the electrical panel, or other energized equipment, stay out of the water.
If the main power can be shut off from a dry location, shut it off. If reaching the main disconnect requires entering standing water, do not go in to turn it off yourself. Contact the utility company or a qualified electrician.
Do not restore power or begin using electrical drying equipment until the electrical system and affected equipment are safe to use. Never operate an electrical appliance while standing in water.
Flooding can also create structural, gas, sewage, chemical, and other hazards. If the space is not clearly safe to enter, treat that as the first problem. The dehumidifier comes later.

A dehumidifier can be very useful after a flood, broken pipe, overflowing appliance, or other water event. But it is useful at a specific point in the cleanup.
It does not pump standing water out of a basement. It does not make sewage-contaminated materials safe. It does not repair wet drywall, insulation, flooring, or framing. And it does not fix the leak that caused the problem.
What a dehumidifier can do is help remove moisture from the air while wet materials are drying. Once the water source is stopped, standing water is removed, unsafe or contaminated materials are addressed, and the space is safe to work in, lowering indoor humidity can become an important part of getting the house dry again.
The faster that happens, the better. EPA recommends cleaning and drying a flooded home and its contents within about 24 to 48 hours when possible because prolonged dampness increases the chance of mold growth.

A dehumidifier helps after the immediate water problem is under control. Remove standing water, address electrical and contamination hazards, and deal with materials that cannot be saved. Then dehumidification can help pull moisture from the air as the remaining structure and contents continue to dry.
First, Deal With the Water
A dehumidifier should not be the first piece of equipment you reach for while several inches of water are still standing on the floor.
The basic order is:
- Stop the source, if possible.
- Make sure the area is electrically and structurally safe.
- Remove standing water.
- Remove materials that cannot reasonably be cleaned and dried.
- Clean contaminated surfaces as appropriate for the type of water involved.
- Then use appropriate airflow and dehumidification to help finish the drying process.
If water has reached electrical equipment, outlets, appliances, wiring, or the electrical panel, electrical safety comes before drying equipment.
A normal household outlet being nearby does not automatically make it safe to run a dehumidifier. Floodwater may have affected wiring, receptacles, appliances, or circuits that are not visibly damaged.

A Broken Supply Pipe and a Natural Flood Are Not the Same Problem
A burst clean-water supply pipe may start with relatively clean water.
Water coming through the front door during a hurricane or across the yard during a flash flood is a different situation. Floodwater can contain sewage, chemicals, soil, bacteria, debris, and other contaminants. CDC recommends treating floodwater cautiously because you often do not know what it picked up before entering the house.
Even a clean-water leak becomes a more complicated problem when water sits for a long time, soaks into porous materials, travels into wall cavities, or reaches dirty areas.
That is why “put a dehumidifier in the room” is not a complete flood-cleanup plan.
Where a Dehumidifier Actually Helps
After bulk water has been removed, moisture remains in places you cannot pick up with a pump or wet vacuum.
Wood framing may still be damp. Concrete can hold moisture. Drywall that remains in place can be wet. Furniture, subfloors, cabinets, and other materials may slowly release moisture back into the room.
That water evaporates into the air.
A dehumidifier removes some of that moisture from the air, allowing additional moisture in wet materials to evaporate. Appropriate ventilation, temperature, air movement, and dehumidification can all contribute to the drying process.
EPA specifically includes dehumidifiers among the equipment that can help dry a home after flooding.
Visible mold changes the job. Do not automatically start blasting a moldy area with fans. Air movement can spread mold spores into other parts of the house. Mold cleanup and containment may need to come before aggressive air movement.
This is where a dehumidifier earns its keep: after the immediate water and safety problems are under control, while the structure and contents continue releasing moisture.
What a Dehumidifier Cannot Fix
A dehumidifier cannot compensate for water that is still entering the house.
It also cannot reliably solve:
- standing water
- an active plumbing leak
- groundwater intrusion
- saturated insulation hidden inside walls
- water trapped under flooring
- contaminated porous materials
- structural damage
- sewage contamination
- existing mold that requires proper cleanup
Dry air around a wet wall does not automatically mean the middle of that wall is dry.
That is one reason we recommend measuring conditions instead of judging by feel alone. Indoor relative humidity tells you what is happening in the air, but drying building materials can require additional inspection or moisture measurements.

Sewage Backup Is a Different Problem
If the water came from a backed-up sewer, toilet, septic system, or another source that may contain sewage, this is no longer simply a humidity-control problem.
CDC warns people to avoid contact with floodwater that may contain sewage and other contaminants.
A dehumidifier may eventually be part of drying the structure, but drying contaminated material does not sanitize it.
Contaminated materials may need specialized cleaning or removal, protective equipment may be necessary, and substantial sewage contamination is a good reason to involve an experienced water-damage or remediation contractor.
In other words, do not put a dehumidifier next to a sewage backup and consider the problem handled.
Watch the Humidity While the House Dries
Once cleanup is underway and the space is safe, a simple humidity meter becomes useful.
Measure the Trend, Not One Number
Take readings in the affected area and in an unaffected part of the house. If the damaged area remains substantially more humid than the rest of the house, moisture may still be entering the air from wet materials or another moisture source.
As drying progresses, that difference should generally narrow. For a larger loss, one sensor in the hallway may not tell you what is happening in the basement, damaged bedroom, or closed room.

The goal here is measurement, not turning a flood cleanup into a shopping trip.
Do Not Assume Bigger Is the Whole Answer
A larger dehumidifier can remove more moisture, but equipment capacity is only part of the drying problem.
Air has to reach wet materials. Closed wall cavities can stay wet. Water beneath flooring can remain trapped. A divided basement may dry unevenly. And if humid outdoor air is continuously entering the house, the dehumidifier may spend much of its capacity removing new moisture instead of drying the original water damage.
For significant flooding, restoration contractors often use commercial dehumidifiers, air movers, moisture meters, and controlled drying plans rather than simply placing one residential unit in the center of the room.
For a smaller clean-water leak, however, a good portable dehumidifier can be a useful part of the homeowner drying process once the immediate water problem has been handled.

The Useful Question Is Not “Will a Dehumidifier Fix the Flood?”
It won’t.
The better question is: After the water is removed, the space is safe, and cleanup is underway, can a dehumidifier help the remaining wet materials dry faster?
Often, yes. That is exactly the job it is good at.
But when the source is still active, standing water remains, electrical hazards exist, materials are saturated or hidden, mold is already established, or the water contains sewage or other contamination, the job has moved beyond ordinary household humidity control.
