If one humidity meter says 47% and another says 51%, you do not necessarily own one good meter and one liar. Consumer hygrometers have accuracy tolerances, sensors respond at different speeds, and small temperature or placement differences can change relative humidity readings.
Fast answer
Check placement, give the meter time to stabilize, and then compare it beside another meter. A small, consistent difference can be normal. A large difference that remains during a controlled comparison, erratic readings, or a sensor that barely responds gives you a better reason to test further or replace the meter.
Start by asking whether the reading is believable
A reading can be surprising without being wrong. A basement may really run 10 percentage points higher than the upstairs. A bedroom with the door closed overnight may behave differently from the hallway. A meter on a cold window sill may show a higher RH than one on an interior shelf.
Before blaming the instrument, use the humidity meter placement guide. Move the meter away from vents, windows, direct sun, showers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and other local influences.
Four checks before you replace a meter

Why two humidity meters show different readings
Two meters can disagree because their sensors have different tolerances, response times, airflow exposure, temperatures, or manufacturing offsets. Even meters from the same package may not display identical numbers.
Temperature matters because relative humidity changes with temperature. If one meter is slightly warmer than the other, the displayed RH can differ even when both are exposed to the same amount of moisture in the air.

How much disagreement is normal?
Check the manufacturer’s stated RH accuracy when one is provided. If each meter is rated at ±3% RH, one could read 47% while another reads 53% and both could technically remain within their specifications when the actual humidity is 50%.

For routine home monitoring, a difference of a few percentage points usually matters less than whether humidity stays in a reasonable range or repeatedly moves in the wrong direction. A meter that consistently reads 3 points high can still show useful trends. A meter that jumps unpredictably between 42% and 68% under steady conditions cannot.
Give the sensor time to stabilize
A humidity sensor does not instantly adjust after you move it between rooms. Temperature changes, handling, airflow, and the sensor’s response speed can all delay the final reading.
Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before making a basic comparison. Waiting several hours or overnight produces a better comparison when you are trying to identify a small offset. Do not keep picking up, breathing on, or moving the meters while testing them.

A useful side-by-side comparison
- Place two or more meters on the same shelf or table, close together but not touching.
- Keep them away from direct airflow, windows, exterior walls, sunlight, and moisture sources.
- Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes. Leave them overnight when you need a more useful comparison.
- Record the readings several times without moving the meters.
- Swap their physical positions and see whether the difference follows the meter or the location.
If meter A stays about 3 points higher than meter B regardless of position, you probably have a consistent offset. If the difference disappears or reverses after you swap positions, temperature, airflow, or another local condition may be the larger cause.
If you bought a multi-pack, compare all of the meters together before spreading them around the house. A cluster of similar readings gives you a practical baseline. One obvious outlier is easier to identify when five other meters remain close together.
Can you correct a meter that reads consistently high or low?
Some humidity meters allow manual calibration or an offset in their settings. Many inexpensive panel meters do not. Check the instructions or app before assuming the meter can be adjusted.
If an adjustable meter consistently reads 4 points low during a reliable comparison, you can apply a +4% RH correction. If it reads 4 points high, apply a -4% RH correction. Recheck it after changing the setting.

For a nonadjustable meter, write the normal offset on the back or keep it in your notes. A stable meter that reads 3 points high may still be useful. If the meter is cheap and far outside the others, replacing the outlier often makes more sense than spending more money trying to certify it.
Should you use a salt test?
A salt test creates a controlled environment near 75% RH at normal room temperature. It can show whether a meter reads high or low around that point. It does not prove that the meter is equally accurate at 35%, 50%, or 65% RH.
Use a salt test when you need more confidence than a side-by-side comparison provides, when you own an adjustable meter, or when the meter is valuable enough to justify the effort. Do not buy an expensive calibration kit to rescue a basic nonadjustable meter that costs less to replace.
Basic salt-test procedure
- Place a small amount of ordinary table salt in a bottle cap or shallow container.
- Add a few drops of water to make a damp paste. Do not dissolve the salt or leave it floating in a puddle.
- Place the salt and meter inside an airtight bag or sealed container. Keep the meter from touching the salt or water.
- Seal the container and leave it at a stable room temperature for 8 to 12 hours.
- Read the meter without leaving the container open long enough to exchange much air with the room.

A reading close to 75% RH is the expected result. For example, a stable reading of 71% suggests the meter reads about 4 points low near that test condition. Apply an offset only if the meter supports one. Otherwise, record the difference and decide whether the meter remains useful.
Do not calibrate away a placement problem
If a sensor reads high only beside a cold window or low only under a supply vent, the location is the problem. Calibration cannot make a bad placement representative.
When should you replace the meter?
Replacement is reasonable when the meter:
- Remains far from several other meters during a controlled comparison.
- Cannot stabilize under steady conditions.
- Produces large, erratic jumps that the other meters do not show.
- Responds very slowly or appears stuck at one value.
- Has visible contamination, corrosion, water damage, or sensor damage.
- Cannot provide the accuracy required for the job.
For ordinary homeowner decisions, believable trends and repeatable readings matter more than chasing a perfect decimal point. For a cheap nonadjustable meter, replacing a clear outlier is usually the practical answer.

What to buy if your meter fails the checks
